Synopsis

Mac MacDonald's life is pretty good. He likes his job, especially the hot new receptionist who seems interested in him, and he thinks he treats his cat, Meowsy, well, too, until a near-death experience leaves him with the ability to hear animals thoughts. Then he finds out what Meowsy really thinks of him and is also horrified to discover that animals are actually plotting to take over the world.

Review

"Old MacDonald Had an Animal Farm" is a stand-alone short story. Our main character, Mac, has a near-death experience, after which he discovers that he can understand what animals are saying, but he's horrified to learn that they're plotting to take over the world. This was an amusing little tale. If you've ever wondered what those meows and woofs from your favorite pets mean, this story explores that scenario. I have to admit that the question of what animals might do to us humans if they actually were able to take over is a bit terrifying to think about. Ultimately the answer as presented here is both a little scary and a little humorous, so overall, I enjoyed this creative interpretation of the inner lives of the creatures we share our planet with. "Old MacDonald Had an Animal Farm" can be found in the anthology Blood Lite III: Aftertaste.
